Sugarloaf USA located in Maine is doubling the size of its current operation and it is all slated to be backcountry/slackcountry gladed skiing. Having skied Sugarloaf for many, many years and experienced their uncrowded powder rich operation - this will be a big boost to what they currently have to offer. They already offer the only above tree line skiing in the east and this will position them to be the biggest ski resort east of the rockies. Go Sugarloaf.

See the interview here.

Work will begin Monday on an expansion to Burnt Mountain. For years ski enthusiasts have talked about getting the opportunity to ski on the next peak.

The mountainside won't look like your typical ski resort with clearly marked trails and chairlifts. The Burnt Mountain portion will offer more natural, backcountry skiing.

It is just part of a 10 year development plan which includes 500 new snow guns, new chairlifts, year round events and a facelift for the lodge.

While we are all enjoying the summer sun at the beach Greg Hill is busy backcountry skiing everyday, 5,500' per day to be exact. This is the number of feet he must climb each and everyday for a year in order to hit the 2 million foot mark by Dec 31st. He is currently in South America enjoying their winter season, as a sponsored skier this is technically his job - not a back gig but still a bit of a grind each and every day. Want a rest day, no problem - that'll be 11,000 the next day. Flight to South America takes you out of the mountains for 4 days - well thats 22,000' the next day. You get the idea.

Experienced Backcountry Skiier Killed On The Snowfield Above Cony Lake Near Finch Lake In Rocky Mountain National Park.

At 8:15 a.m., Sunday, July 25, park rangers were notified of an overdue backcountry skiier. The 40 year old Colorado man was planning to ski in the backcountry near Finch Lake on Saturday and had not been heard from. At 9:20 a.m. park rangers went to the Finch Lake Trailhead and found the man’s car.

The man was reported to be an experienced backcountry skiier who was planning on hiking in to and skiing a snowfield near Finch Lake. At 4:00 p.m. park rangers found the man’s body on a snowfield above Cony Lake in the Hutcheson Lakes drainage near the southern boundary of Rocky Mountain National Park. At this time, the cause of death is unknown. The man’s body is roughly 10 miles from the nearest trailhead.

Because of weather conditions and logistics the body recovery will take place on Monday. Rangers will remain close to the scene of the accident tonight. His body will be transferred tomorrow to the Boulder County Coroner’s office. The victim’s name will not be released until next of kin are notified.

Greg Hill's altimeter watch now reads 1,000,237 which is an impressive feat given he started on Jan 1st of this year [not three years ago as you would think], however he is only half way to his goal of two million feet. Given that he is currently in South America skiing every day and it is only July it seems he is right on track to achieving this.

He has previously ski toured one million feet in a single year so this is nothing new for Greg - however he is now in new territory and looking to double the old record of one million feet [set by Greg Hill of course]. So whats up for next year,... three million feet in a single year? Impossible. Or is it?

There is talk of this coming winter to be a La Nina winter which typically mean above average snowfall for the BC interior and cooler temps:

The majority of models predict ENSO-neutral conditions (between -0.5oC to +0.5oC in the Niño-3.4 region) through early 2011. However, over the last several months, a growing number of models, including the NCEP Climate Forecast System (CFS), indicate the onset of La Niña conditions during June-August 2010. There is an increasing confidence in these colder model forecasts, which is supported by recent observations that show cooling trends in the Pacific Ocean and signs of coupling with the atmospheric circulation. Therefore, conditions are favorable for a transition to La Niña conditions during June-August 2010.

Fingers crossed.

A new study, published in the journal Resuscitation and reported on by Reuters, reveals under what circumstances doctors are most likely to be successful in reviving an avalanche victim. After reviewing medical literature, the doctors discovered that nine of 10 people in cardiac arrest who've been buried in the snow for 15 minutes can be revived. However, after 35 minutes buried in the snow, only three in 10 people will be revived. Doctors found that after 35 minutes in the snow, avalanche victims can be saved when there's a free airway. If the airway is clogged by snow or vomit, the victim most likely can't be saved. Since rescue teams are often far away, survival could depend on a companion's ability to help before hypothermia occurs.

Black Diamond Equipment Ltd., the Salt Lake County-based developer and manufacturer of climbing and backcountry skiing equipment, has been sold for $90 million to Clarus Corp., an investor group in Stamford, Conn.

Clarus also spent $45 million to acquire Gregory Mountain Products LLC, a Sacramento-based company whose specialization in technical backpacking and mountaineering products is expected to complement Black Diamond’s gear for rock climbers, ice climbers, Alpinists and freeride skiers.

The combined company will retain the Black Diamond name, and Black Diamond co-founder and CEO Peter Metcalf will become its president and CEO, and be on its board. A Clarus Corp. note to shareholders about the acquisition said nothing about what the deal means for Black Diamond’s plant at 2092 E. 3900 South or the company’s employees.

The Economic Development Corp. of Utah categorizes Black Diamond as being within a group that employs 100 to 249 people.

Metcalf praised the deal in a statement, contending Clarus’s investment will ensure “the golden years of Black Diamond are not behind us but clearly ahead.”

Hopefully the acquiring company’s capital can be put to use for R&D and other quality enhancing activities as opposed to just being another buyout with intentions of squeezing every last dime of margin out of the product and a race to the bottom for quality.

Snowmobilers who endanger the lives of others may see their sleds seized by authorities, under legislation proposed by B.C. Tourism Minister Kevin Krueger.

The legislation would attempt to prevent tragedies such as the one near Revelstoke on March 13, when two Alberta men died in an avalanche believed to have been triggered by an activity called high-marking.

In high-marking, snowmobilers compete to get farthest up a steep slope, leaving behind track marks in the snow.

"I think that this extremely risk behaviour … especially if it's done in an area where other people are put at risk, should be the target of severe sanctions," Krueger said in Victoria on Monday.

The March slide could easily have taken the lives of the 200 people watching the high-marking event near Revelstoke, he said.

The legislation targeting snowmobilers may be similar to a law that lets authorities seize property obtained through crime, he said.

Kurtis Reynolds of Strathmore and Shay Snortland of Lacombe, both 33, were killed and three other people were seriously injured in the avalanche.

The RCMP announced April 29 that no charges would be laid in connection with the slide.
