Darn Tough SocksCombining a name like Darn Tough to a pair of technical socks and then backing it up with a lifetime guarantee is enough to peak the interest of most committed backcountry skiers and hikers. It did for us here at Backcountry Skiing HQ and so, since spring, we have been testing a few of Darn Tough's specialty ski and hiking socks. The humble sock is an afterthought for some adventurers unless feet are in pain or discomfort, which is crazy when you think about the fact that we spend all of our time on our feet. We have learned through this review that not all socks are created equally, many are built to perform but few are really are designed to perform and last a lifetime. So what is it that makes a sock a Darn Tough sock?

I'm always on the lookout for better ski touring socks. While I love merino I've yet to find a merino sock that works in my touring boots.  I've found in the past that socks wiht any kind of loops on the inside cause extra friction and will lead to blistering.  Do all of the Darn socks have loops?  What about the ultraa-light for ski touring?

Hey 2wheeler, we hear ya'. The ultra-light socks (ideal for ski touring) have loops around the shin area only but the wool is super soft and also they are so small that we did not have a problem with them—or any of the DarnTough socks for that matter. Maybe it's due to a synthetic mix that you have had issues in the past? Darn Tough socks have a really high thread count so the loops are really fine, so in theory you shouldn't have any problem with them rubbing.

Let us know if you buy a pair and how you go?

They are guarenteed for life.
