First turns of 2014-15 - SOAP BOX - get the stoke going
September 3, 2014
We had a rainfall warning in Canmore so I pulled out the fair weather carpenter card today. Called up a locals weekend (tues/wed) buddy and headed into highwood to see where the freezing line was.
To our suprise a plow was going up the road before even making it all the way to the highwood meadows parking lot. I was even more suprised to see almost 20 cm in the lot at barly over 2200m. Glad to have actually brought my rock gear I threw my board on my bag and we headed into ptarmagin cirque.
The snow was wet, boot top deep, and in places just below the knee. Much better than most years in later October. Still apartent of the amount of sharks that were lurking just below the surface we headed to a mellow grass/bush slope in seek of our first turns of the 2014-15 season.
We were able to ride tentatively down the grassy ridge that's above the summer hiking trail, down the trail and out onto the highway. A good couple hundred meters of elevation that's all within an hour from the car, much better than the glacier slogs of August.
I'm sure this will all melt as the weekend forecast calls for warmer sunny weather but, get the stoke going. Winter is coming, so enjoy the last of your summer activities.
