Fall Snow Fall = Winter Snowpack
As the first significant winter storm passes over western Canada backcountry skiers will without a doubt be heading out for their first turns of the season over the holiday weekend. Previous September snowfalls lay below the new storm snow. Public avalanche forecasts are not currently available and field observations are very limited. While current forecasts are for cool, clear and calm weather leading into the weekend, backcountry users will need to assess changing weather conditions and snowpack stability on without the input of a public forecast. Early season coverage means that stumps, rocks and other hazards will be lurking just below the surface. Even a small avalanche can have serious consequences. This, of course, doesn’t mean that you should stay home this weekend. Remember to ease your way into the ski season and be sure to read weather forecasts and assess snowpack conditions carefully before you commit to avalanche terrain. Below Are some of my favourite weather resources and don't forget to check the MIN reports on avalanche.ca. Have a safe season opener out there and be sure to share your condition reports on Backcountry Skiing Canada.http://www.acmg/mcr/
