New Summer Apparel From Outdoor Research

Outdoor Research has a long list of new apparel designed specifically for warm weather outdoor adventures and two items that stood out most to us here at Backcountry Skiing Canada are the Swift Lite Hybrid Shorts and the Stratoburst Rain Hat. These two items are both new for Spring 2025 and work well for hikers, and trail runners.

Outdoor Research Swift Lite Hybrid Shorts

These shorts are designed with Hybrid-Mapped Materials for optimal breathability, durability, and range of movement. Their proprietary bluesign® approved Ferrosi fabrics are water-resistant, quick-drying, lightweight and stretchy to allow for optimal movement while keeping you cool and dry. They have an internal drawcord and elasticized waist to create a custom fit along with several pockets for storage of essential items like gels, keys and a credit card. There are two front hand pockets along with a zippered thigh pocket for more valuable items. Side slits at the hem increase range of motion while running and hiking
and a reflective logos ensures you’ll be visible at dust and low light conditions.

Outdoor Research also offers a lined version of the Swift Lite Shorts in a non-hybrid version that is more aimed at trail, road and track runners. Like the Hybrid version, these shorts are quick-drying, lightweight and made with bluesign approved materials. The main difference is that these lined versions forego the hand and zippered thigh pockets but have pockets on the back along with a built-in gusseted boxer brief liner.

      Outdoor Research Stratoburst Rain Hat

Outdoor Research’s new Stratoburst Rain Hat is not only waterproof and breathable but is made with bluesign® approved recycled materials. The Ventia 2.5L fabric has just the right amount of stretch and has fully taped seams so it’s completely waterproof. The large 360° wrap around brim is large enough that it provides full face and neck protection from the rain so your entire head will stay dry in the wettest of down pours. The Stratoburst Rain Hat packs down super small so it’s ideal for travel and hikes when the weather may not completely cooperate. The floating foam-stiffened brim has a stiff structure so it won’t deform and the adjustable back cinch allows you to tighten the fit to keep it on your head in windy conditions.

If you don’t need the added waterproof protection and want a lighter, more versatile option then Outdoor Research also offers the Helios Sun Hat which is not waterproof, but is very light and breathable with the same sun protection.

      • Waterproof, Breathable, Windproof, Lightweight

Stellar Softshell Pants 2.0: Your Go-To for Mountain Adventures

Designed for the full spectrum of mountain activities, the new Stellar Softshell Pants 2.0 are incredibly versatile. Whether you're hiking, climbing, glacier traveling, or ski touring, these pants excel. While primarily engineered as comfortable and durable alpine pants for hiking, I personally discovered their impressive performance on a warm spring ski day.

The secret lies in their advanced softshell fabric: it's not only tough and resilient, but also wind-resistant, water-resistant, highly breathable, and remarkably stretchy. Plus, it's Bluesign-certified, crafted from a blend of quick-drying, durable nylon and elastane fibers. This combination ensures an exceptional range of movement while maintaining a snug, comfortable fit. A PFC-free DWR treatment adds another layer of protection, effectively repelling light rain and wet snow.

Stellar's philosophy for the 2.0 version is clear: "Upgraded performance, improved durability, and an even better fit while adhering to elevated environmental standards. Standing by our reductive design philosophy and continuous strive for improvement, we updated the fabric and the fit and made various improvements but kept its timeless lines and carefully considered details.”
      Thoughtful Design for Peak Performance

The Softshell Pants 2.0 feature articulated panels for optimal movement. When the intensity picks up, large ventilation zippers on the side of each leg offer a fast and effective way to manage heat and moisture. Storage is abundant and practical: two large cargo pockets are easily accessible even when wearing a harness or backpack, while two hip pockets and a zippered back pocket provide ample space for smaller essentials.

Durability is key, especially in rugged terrain. The lower inside leg is reinforced to prevent cuts from ski edges or crampons. For seamless transitions between footwear, the bottom leg hems are adjustable with snap-buttons and include generous zippers to accommodate ski boots and allow access to buckles.

Stellar has meticulously redesigned these alpine softshell pants to be versatile enough for nearly any mountain adventure, and stylish enough for everyday wear around town.

      Features:
      • Wind-resistant, water-resistant, breathable, and extremely stretchable.
      • Hard-wearing softshell fabric containing 49% recycled fibers.
      • Two long side zips for fast and easy ventilation.
      • The leg opening is adjustable and allows for a perfect fit for everything from lightweight trail-running shoes to robust mountaineering boots.
      • Adjustable waist, with belt loops and raised back for extra comfort and support.
      • Two front pockets, two leg pockets, one back pocket.
      • Durable Kevlar® reinforcement at bottom hem.
      Fabrics:
Main fabric: 49% recycled nylon, 43% polyester, 8% elastane. 275g/sqm. Woven in Taiwan.
Main fabric denier: 90D x 90D + 300D. (This is a woven fabric in which the warp and weft have different denier numbers.)

      Meindl Literock Free Trail Shoe

Meindl has been crafting footwear for over three centuries, since its inception in 1683 by Petrus Meindl in Kirchanschöring, Germany. Nestled in the heart of the Bavarian Alps, Meindl boasts a long tradition of quality, unparalleled comfort, and innovation. Their latest trail shoe, the Literock Free, is designed to tackle hiking trails of varied terrain types and in all weather conditions, thanks to their Vibram soles which provide best-in-class traction and durability. The Gore-Tex liners offer added protection when the weather turns wet, and their full wrap-around rand increases their ability to repel water and mud. Cork insoles allow your feet to customize the fit over time for increased comfort and shock absorption on rougher terrain. The Literock Free Trail Shoes have plenty of room up front in the toe box while still ensuring a snug fit overall, especially in the heel. This is due mainly to the last design, but also to their innovative Variofix lacing system which provides ample ankle support and a secure fit.

Having heard about Meindl footwear for several years now, and people claiming that they are the best-fitting footwear money can buy, I was happy to finally get a pair to test out on the local trails. The Literock Free Trail Shoes turned out to be just that: an incredibly comfortable hiking shoe that provided a secure and comfortable fit right out of the box. The on-trail stability and flexible, lightweight walkability were impressive, while the durability and overall look were second to none.

      Features:
      • Waterproof and Breathable: The Gore-Tex lining provides 100% waterproof protection while allowing for breathability, keeping your feet dry and comfortable.
      • Durable Uppers: Waxed full-grain leather uppers offer long-lasting durability and resistance to scuffs and abrasion.
      • Comfort Fit Last: Designed to provide ample room up front while ensuring a snug, stable fit at the heel.
      • Cork Insoles: Form to your feet for customized comfort and shock absorption.
      • Meindl Multigrip Outsole: Provides advanced traction on various terrains and cushions the foot.
      • Lightweight and Flexible: Meindl Flex Rating A (Ultralight Flex) for comfortable all-day wear and light hiking.
      • Variofix Lacing System: Offers ankle support and a secure fit.
      • Durable Vibram Soles: Provide excellent traction and durability.
      • Full Rand: Enhances durability and protection.

With non-slip ProFlex material in the temples and nose bridge, the Westwater Sunglasses will stay put no matter the adventure.

The Westwater Sunglasses use ZEAL’s plant-based Z-Resin frames, which are made with a minimum of 45% bio resin which is good for the planet and even better should you unfortunately lose them in the wild. With their stylish look and technical attributes, the Westwater Sunglasses simply can't be beat.

Nemo Persist 30L Endless Promise All-Adventure Backpack

Nemo’s latest addition to their backpack lineup is called the Persist and it comes in 30 and 45L versions for both men and women. We opted to test out the 30L Persist as it fit our technical day-hiking pack needs the best. Don’t let the Persist’s clean exterior design fool you as it is loaded with technical features and tough enough to take on hiking, climbing and snowy adventures. Its U-shaped zippered back panel provides super-quick access to the contents inside and a comfortable padded carry no matter how heavy you go. The CCubed cushioning is made from a recyclable foam which has impressive wicking capabilities thanks in part to the all-new DryWing wraparound back panel design. This unique design is engineered to pull sweat away from the body and move it to the wings where it can more quickly be dissipated. The Persist’s shoulder straps and padded waist belt are also reinforced with CCubed for increased comfort and evenly distributed weight.

There are a series of lash points to increase the Persist’s versatility and modularity while the storage options on the shoulder straps and waist belt help keep the things you need most close at hand.

Nemo’s Endless Promise means the Persist is fully recyclable and uses sustainable materials surpassing traditional ones. The 300D/900D ripstop weave on the pack’s exterior is made from Nemo’s CERO fabric which is solution dyed to reduce waste and is up to 20x more water resistant than the industry standard.

      Features:
      • Positioned at the body’s heaviest sweat zones, the CCubed™ recycled, recyclable cushioning wicks away sweat and helps dissipate body heat and moisture.
      • Recycled CERO™ fabrics used on Persist provide excellent strength and waterproofing and are solution-dyed to reduce water waste.
      • A large U-shaped zippered opening creates a single access point for both main storage compartments.
      • The Wraparound DryWing™ back panel is engineered to pull sweat away from the body so you stay dry.
      • Reinforced with CCubed™ cushioning, the wide, flexible shoulder straps comfortably conform to the body and include zippered storage pockets for small accessories.
      • Designed for a fine-tuned, active fit, the Men’s pack offers a range of longer torso lengths and includes shoulder straps that are cut to comfortably lay flat across the chest.
      • The padded waistbelt includes zippered pockets and a deployable water bottle holder.
      • Includes 3 compression straps and 2 universal straps that can be configured to fit your specific needs and activity.

      Helinox Chair One High-Back (re)

Heliox makes the lightest, strongest, most comfortable lightweight, packable furniture which includes camp chairs, cots, tables & outdoor equipment. Their innovative designs use the highest quality materials like the proprietary DAC aluminum alloy frames and nylon resin hubs. While strength and durability are at the core of every Helinox product so is the environment, which is why you’ll find bluesign-certified and recycled polyester ripstop fabrics are used which resist tears and are made to withstand the elements.

Helinox’s new (re) products such as the Chair One High-Back (re) are a redesign of their much loved Chair One. The High-Back version is Helinox’s number one selling chair style and for good reason as the extra height on the chair’s back increases comfort exponentially over the traditional Chair One. The new (re) version of the Chair One High-Back is now even more comfortable thanks to the seat’s design. It uses a second tension line within the perimeter of the chair to effectively distribute the user’s weight around the frame of the chair creating a noticeable ‘bear hug’ like experience.

You’ll be amazed at how comfortable the Chair One High-Back (re) is compared to the previous version. Its compact, collapsible frame is strong and durable making it hard for other knockoffs to even compare. The shock-corded poles lock the frame into place and make for quick and efficient setup and tear down and everything fits into the full zip case (included).

Camp life has never been so comfortable and easy and the Chair One High-Back (re) is just the start of Helinox’s (re) products so be sure to check them all out.

      Therm-A-Rest Neoloft Sleeping Pad

Therm-A-Rest’s new Neoloft is a lightweight/packable year round sleeping pad that’s ideal for backpacking or car camping. At 11.7cm / 4.6” thick, the Neoloft is incredibly comfortable—even for side sleepers. It uses a 3D construction with vertical sidewalls that attach the top and bottom fabric which eliminates the traditional tapered edges found on most sleeping pads. This effectively creates side rails to cradle you in the centre of the mat limiting “roll off” and increasing the sleep surface by 20%.

A plush stretch knit fabric makes the Neoloft soft to the touch and much more comfortable than typical nylon mats. The stretch quality of the Neoloft’s fabric conform to your body and eliminate pressure points which provide more contouring support.

Therm-A-Rest has build the Neoloft with what they call ContourCore Matrix which is two stacked rows of triangular chambers with a layer of ThermaCapture that reflects our body heat back at you. This gives the Neoloft a four season R-value of 4.7 while still keeping its weight down to an impressive 910g / 2lb.

For fast inflation and deflation the Neoloft is fitted with Therm-A-Rest’s patented TwinLock Valve System which is an innovative one-way air flow valve. This allows you to quickly inflate the Neoloft with the provided high-volume, seam-sealed pump sack inflation bag which reduces any moisture from your breath getting inside the bag and degrading it. Turn the valve the other way and you can quickly deflate the Neoloft or adjust its loft to your desired firmness.

      Features:
      • Surface is made of a plush 50-denier stretch knit fabric
      • 3D Construction has a taper-free sleep surface making it ideal for side sleepers, nighttime movers
      • Reflective ThermaCapture™ reflects body heat back at you provides great comfort and warmth
      • ContourCore Matrix™ construction allows the NeoLoft to contour, cushion, support, insulate and pack down small
      • Side rails cradle you in place
      • TwinLock™ Valve system pairs with a seam-sealed pump sack to make inflation a breeze
      • Included: Thermarest® pump sack, stuff sack, and repair kit

      Ursack AllMitey Grizzly 20L Bag

More and more park systems are requiring bear proof storage containers on backcountry adventures and the standard products are made from polycarbonate or other plastics. While these are highly effective solutions the containers are heavy, bulky and don’t pack down as you use up the contents inside. This is where Ursack shines, their 20L AllMitey Grizzly protects your food from not only bear’s teeth and claws but also smaller creatures such as mice, raccoon, squirrels, and pine martens who may try and shew through the bag. The Ursack Allmitey Grizzly Edition is virtually puncture-proof thanks to its Laminated Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWP) and Kevlar construction. The Ursack AllMitey Grizzly Bag measures 20 x 11” when cinched closed and holds 20 litres of food and supplies (about 9 days of freeze dried food), and weighs only 391g. The top of the bag is closed by cinching the 6 foot braided high tensile cord with a double overhand knot. This high tensile strength cord has reflective tracers and is six feet in length so there is plenty of cord to secure the Ursack to a tree.

If you want to protect your food in a lighter more compact bear proof system on your next adventure then be sure to look into the Ursack AllMitey Grizzly 20L Bag.

Sea To Summit Ether Light XR Pro Insulated Air Sleeping Pad

Sea To Summit’s Ether Light XT has been my go-to insulated mat for the past few years, as it is one of the most comfortable mats in its class. Building upon this foundation, the new Ether Light XR and XR Pro Insulated Air Sleeping Pads represent the evolution of Sea To Summit’s Air Sprung Cell construction. Traditional sleeping mats often feature vertical or horizontal baffle construction, but these designs typically lack comfort, and when you move your lower body, the mat’s baffles do not prevent the interior air from shifting, which can then affect your upper body, and vice-versa. Sea To Summit resolved this issue years ago when they introduced their line of sleeping mats that utilize individual Air Sprung Cells to enhance comfort and virtually eliminate secondary motion for active sleepers. Their new Ether Light XR Pro Insulated Air Sleeping Pad incorporates 132 individual Air Sprung Cells and a newly developed ThermalCore Insulation, which significantly increases insulation value while minimizing weight and packed volume. The Ether Light XR Pro boasts an R-value of 7.4, making it ideal for 4-season use, yet it packs down smaller than previous versions and weighs only 720g / 25.4oz for the large size. The key to this light and compact insulation lies in multiple Thermal Radiant Material (TRM) layers that are quiet yet thermally efficient.

Sea To Summit offers the Ether Light in both XR and XR Pro versions. These are Sea To Summit’s most insulated air mats, with the XR version having an R-value of 4.1 for 3+ season backpacking, whereas the XR Pro’s R-value of 7.4 is better suited for higher altitude conditions and winter ski traverses. Both mats provide 10cm of plush comfort and a durable construction with double the weld strength of previous models. Like previous versions, the Ether Light XR and XR Pro Mats come with a stuff sack featuring a built-in Airstream pump for easy inflation and deflation, thanks to the mat’s XPRESS valve system.

If you desire the most comfortable and easy-to-use 3+ or 4-season mat on the market, then the new Sea To Summit Ether Light XR and XR Pro Insulated Air Sleeping Pads are the ideal solution.
