Special Avalanche Bulletin
Have you noticed the big orange blob on the overview map of Avalanche Canada? This blob is accompanied by a new symbol for avalanche.ca, a black and yellow sign. There has been a growing concern over the snowpack structure of the areas highlighted in orange. These areas are typically low snow areas but are particularly low this season. A shallow snowpack and prolonged periods of cold dry weather are a recipe for facetting ( sugar snow ) and tends to create notoriously weak snowpacks.
While these conditions aren't ideal they will only be exacerbated when the new precipitation accumulates as a slab above this weak snowpack. This is typically when things are primed for human triggering. If you plan to recreate these areas please read the link below as it contains valuable information that should influence your decision making based on the current conditions. If you have friends and family who recreate these areas please pass the information along. As always if you are venture out and enjoying the backcountry please consult avalanche.ca before your outing. Stay safe and have a great week.
