When the mountains were wild
When one stands on a peak in the Alps only to see densely populated areas rife with tourists, emotions are stirred and questions begin to bubble up from the deep. “What was it like before all the development in our mountains?” “What did it feel like to hike out and explore your backcountry when wolves and bears still had their space in the mountain wilderness?” These are the questions a group of 5 skiers, snowboarders, and film makers found in that deep place. With this in mind, they made a plan; “Go on a journey to a place and time when the mountains were wild”.Mitch Toelderer, Klaus Zwirner, Jakob Schweighofer, Johannes Hoffmann, and Carlos Blanchard all left their home of Innsbruck, Austria, and traveled through space and time to the “Accursed Mountains” of the Northern Albanian Alps in search of true wilderness. A 25km hike from the Valbona Valley floor, they found it. These fine individuals’ weather storms and ski wild lines in the film When the mountains were wild.
