Smithers avalanche kills one person, one still missing
Just stumbled upon this latest incident near Smithers:
One skier has been killed and a man from Canmore is still missing and is believed to have been buried by the snow after an avalanche swept down a remote mountain near Smithers, British Columbia.
RCMP say four people were heli-skiing near the Burnie Glacier when the snowslide buried three of them Saturday afternoon.
One man was able to pull out another man who suffered minor injuries and together they were able to dig out the body of a 52 year old Regina woman.
Search manager Harold Dykstra tells 660News "We need to do an assessment and do some avalanche control work to make sure the scene is safe for technicians to go in and do the searching and recovery that needs to get done. The weather is preventing the helicopter from getting up to a high enough elevation to do that work."
The skiers, all described as highly experienced, were based at the Burnie Glacier Chalet in a remote area of the mountain range that's accessible only by helicopter.
