During the Fall and Winters months I spend way too much trying to figure out what I need to wear for outdoor activities. Mammut Rime Light IN Flex jacket, might just be the jacket that works under a wide range of winter conditions and activities.
The Rime Light IN Flex Hooded Jacket is a lighter more versatile version of the Rime IN Flex Hooded Jacket. Its versatility is focused more on the cardio intensive backcountry activities, such as hiking, climbing, mountaineering, freeriding, etc.… One of the key features is that it is way more breathable than the ‘non-light Rime jacket. What makes it more breathable is Mammut’s Body-mapped insulation, which is a stretchy fleece panel that runs under the arms and along the sides of the jacket.
On paper the Rime Light does look like a very versatile backcountry jacket, but we wanted to test it limits. So, we took it out for a winter trail run on a cold winter day, with an ambient temperature of -17 C (0 F), but with a windchill dropping to -25C (-13F). The Rime Light performed way better than we expected, the Body-mapped insulation side panels and the Loopsinsulation provided a great mix of protection and warmth from the elements as well as a descent level of breath-ability to help keep moisture off your skin.
This jacket pleasantly surprised me under such cold conditions and without a shell. I really like that this Jacket works both as a mid-layer and as an outer layer. In addition to the above run, I also wore it on a short ski tour as a mid-layer. When I got to the top, I was expecting to swap it out for a heavier down jacket that I had in my pack, but I ended up just continuing with just the Mammut Rime Light. The body mapping and my base layer did a great job of wicking moisture away from my skin.
Mammut promotes this delivering warmth and comfort for a wide range of mountain sports… I would take it a step further and that it also delivers warmth and comfort under a wide range of mountain weather. I would not hesitate to wear this jacket from early fall, through the winter until late spring. I will even throw it in my pack during the summer for those freak Eastern Rocky Mountain summer snowstorms or cold nights.
