For 2016 Native Eyewear released seven new frame styles to complement their advanced N3 POLARIZED LENS technology. To review the new frame offerings we picked up the Sanitas a new frame style for women. Also curious about another new addition to the Native range, the N3 Polarized Reflex Lenses, we included the mens Ward which come with all the bells and whistles that Native has on offer (more on that in a moment).
We first looked at Native eyewear back in 2012 with our review of the Bolder and Trango styles. Then again with the Roan and Hardtop XP frames in 2014. What’s great to see is how the products and technology has been refined over time. A primary focus for Native is to design eyewear that enhances athletic performance and outdoor pursuits, this has seen them develop some innovative lens technology and frame architecture to support that. Let’s start with the
Manufactured of impact-resistant Poly Chrystal Carbonate, Native claims that their optical quality N3™ lenses block 4X more infrared light than regular polarized lenses on the market. Now I don’t have the technology or the skills to scientifically test how much they block damaging rays, filter blue light and reduce glare but my own personal experience and my social research on what others are saying backs up the claim that the lenses do indeed offer quality sharp definition and high contrast. The most important thing of course is that they protect your eyes so you will feel reassured in knowing that they pass Z87.1 safety testing for radiation, providing UV protection from solar UV radiation (UV-A and UV-B) at wavelengths below 400 nm.
Polarized Reflex™ lenses (Mirrored)
The mirror enhances glare reduction (and increases mystery and cool factor). A stylin’ addition to Native range of lenses, they come in:
- Polarized Blue Reflex
- Polarized Silver Reflex
- Polarized Green Reflex (pictured)
- Polarized Bronze Reflex
Let’s not forget the Sportflex™ Lenses
The Ward frames come packaged with interchangeable SportFlex™ lenses which can be conveniently switched out for low-light conditions, such as tree skiing, biking in the woods, early mornings and cloudy days.
How Native Frames their lenses
Let’s talk about how the super most important pieces—the lenses—are held on your face. Since Native are keen on outdoor pursuits themselves they have taken an approach to frames that is super practical. The key attributes to Natives frames include:
- Lightweight: using Rhino-Tuff® Air Frames which is a proprietary high-performance lightweight thermoplastic material which can tolerate high impact and high temps
- Comfort: grippy, comfortable molding is incorporated into the frame construction also a proprietary Cushinol™ material is used on contact areas such as nose pads and temples that eases pressure points and keeps your sunglasses in place while active.
- Stability - Cam-action hinges lock the frame arms in place so the frame sit sturdy on your head
- Safety - Natives Anti-Ocular Intrusion System® prevents lenses from shooting toward your eyes on impact
- Venting - frames are designed to allow for air flow so lenses are less likely to steam up when you are heating up.

Lets look at a few different angles on your face:
We have been wearing the Native Sanitas and Ward sunglasses for the last two months in a variety of conditions. Both frames are ideal for active pursuits as they sit lightly on your face whilst staying in place without leaving indents or applying pressure. The Sanitas in particular feel super light and unimposing on my face. Most importantly of course are the lenses, this is where Native have really excelled in the last few years. The introduction of the N3™ Polarized lenses is a game changer and the cherry on top is that you can have interchangeable lenses depending on the frame you choose. Unfortunately the Sanitas aren’t interchangeable otherwise I would have loved to try out a N3™ Polarized Reflex Blue lens with that frame, this was the only disappointment I had overall (but then I could have chosen another frame). On the flip side we had Ward frames pimped out with and additional N3™ Polarized Reflex Green lens so we had three lenses in total. What we found was that we predominantly used the Green Reflex and the Sportflex™ lenses. The N3™ Polarized Brown lens is great all round but the Reflex Green lens really amps up the contrast and clarity in everyday lighting conditions. I compared both lenses to a competitors (more expensive) proprietary lens and the Native N3™ Polarized is significantly sharper and clearer. The Green Reflex offers a slight green tinge beefing up the saturation of vegetation. The brown lens adds warmth to your viewing. The Sportflex™ lens is a great companion in low light conditions, when biking through the woods we found the lens increased the shadow detail significantly. A friend now has a dedicated pair of biking glasses with Sportflex™ lenses as a result. Native sunglasses are ideal for active pursuits - best of all they offer high quality viewing at a competitive price.
