Federal Funding Boost for Avalanche Canada
The news that Avalanche Canada received a $25 million boost from the Federal Government is a few weeks old now but it is worth mentioning simply because its importance cannot be overstated. The funding came as a one-time endowment after many years of financial struggle. As more people head into the backcountry the greater the need for such an important organization.Avalanche Canada is based in Revelstoke B.C. and they issue daily avalanche bulletins for Western Canada as well as coordinate avalanche education and awareness. One of the objectives of the organization is to eliminate avalanche related fatalities across the country. In 2003 there were 29 avalanche fatalities and today we are down to half that.
Ideally an annual funding model provided through Federal tax dollars would be in place but for now the $25 million should go a long way to help make Avalanche Canada sustainable for many years into the future.
