Changing direction
As skiers and snowboarders, outdoor enthusiasts and wanderers of wild places, the natural world is at the heart of our passions. Many of us have noticed changes in this environment, the cause of which is inevitably traced back to us. And not just skiers and snowboarders, but all industrialized nations. As our impact on the environments we frequent grows more and more invasive, we have been increasingly shifting the balances that have been providing the conditions in which we thrive; the very same conditions which allow us to turn snow covered mountains into our playgrounds, and build the snow sliding communities we have come to know and love. In this sobering article written by Jeremy Jones, the shifting of balance required to change direction while sliding down a slope is likened to the shift required for us to change the direction of current climate trends. It comes as a friendly reminder that we all have the power, and the responsibility, to encourage this change of direction so that future generations may be able to enjoy some of the opportunities available to us now. After all, there is a lot more at stake than the simple pleasures of sliding down mountains.
