Desolation Sound Kayak Trip
My mate and I went on a trip out to Desolation Sound on BC's Sunshine Coast a couple weeks ago. It's a long journey from here in Nelson, so we stopped in Vancouver along the way. From Vancouver, one takes two ferries up the Sunshine Coast. The put-ins for Desolation Sound are in Lund on the western side of the Malasapina Penninsula or Okeover Prov Park on the east. We launched at Okeover.Rather than camp in three different spots for three nights, we found an ideal spot (more or less in the middle of the action) and stayed there. The area was called Feather Cove and our tent platform looked out on the Sound as well as the Coastal Range and The Black Tusk. Feather Cove was a pretty simple paddle from Okeover (about two hours). One day we went over to the Cerme Islands and Tenedos Bay. Third day we headed west and went to the Copeland Islands (really cool).
Though I'm pretty sure I saw a dorsal fin, there were no documented orca sightings. Other wildlife (seals, sea birds, jellyfish, etc) was abundant. Hot tip: consider doing as we did and stay in one spot. If you move between camping areas each day, you get to paddle less. This is an excellent trip for intermediate kayakers. Go.
