Digital Touring Tools—Apps. G3 Vid.
In a continuation of the "nerd-out" post from last week, we are sharing the follow-up tech video from G3—this one focused on apps for the backcountry.I was out for a day-tour with someone using the Gaia app on their phone recently and we had skied multiple laps in a particular zone. By tracking our activities with Gaia, he was able to point us in the direction of the right uptrack for the right line. This was handy but meant that he was always whipping out his phone to check where we were.
My feeling was that we would have figured out where we were anyway, and that was, in fact, half the fun. I support the use of apps to help with navigation, but only when one is feeling disoriented or even lost.
Different strokes for different folks though, eh? Check out this video from G3. It definitely makes a case for apps, like Gaia, in situations where there's poor viz or a storm might be rolling in. What do you think about apps in the BC? Love 'em or hate em?
