GLACIER COLLAPSE, 7 DEAD & MORE STILL MISSING
At least 26 unsuspecting mountaineers on Marmolada glacier in Italy were caught in a tragic slide last week when the glacier suddenly collapsed. Seven people have already been confirmed dead, several are injured in hospital, and at least 14 are still missing in the debris — although its unclear as to exactly how many people were involved.
The glacier, which experts say slid down the mountain at 300kph, was destabilized by unusually warm temperatures creating water lubrication at its base and increased pressure in water-filled crevasses.
A harsh reminder that our changing climate is altering landscapes as we’ve known them. Read more about the incident in Italy here.
