Season Equipment Prep Time!
Ski season may still be a few months away but there’s no better time to start thinking about getting your gear ready for the season. If you don’t do your own work on your skis don’t wait until the last minute when all the shops are busy to have your skis and gear prepped for winter.Grab your skis out of storage and look for any damage to the bases and edges. After sitting for months a layer or two of wax and a good scrape will be in order. Have the edges sharpened even if you don’t plan to spend much time on the groomers.
Inspect your boots for any cracks or broken buckles. There’s nothing worse than rolling up on day one to realize that one of your boot buckles has bit the dust. Check the soles for excessive wear. If you can replace the toes and heel pieces it may be a good idea to do so.
Bindings are often an overlooked piece of equipment. If you take your skis into the shop for a tune before the season bring a boot along and ask them to do a torque test on the bindings to ensure proper release.
Check the state of your skins. Pull them apart and check for any dirt and debris. You can wash them with cold water and hang dry.
Finally, make sure all your avalanche kit is in working order. Test out your beacon to make sure it still functions, put your shovel together, and ensure your probe is ready to go.
If you prepare now you won’t have to spend the day before your first day skiing scrambling to get organized and your opening day will be much more enjoyable.
