The race is on: September Pow
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last week you no doubt have heard about all the snow falling in the mountains across western North America. While Colorado never gets the most early season snow it certainly does get one of the earliest ski starts of anywhere. This year looks to be particularly early given the current cold temps and forecast for the coming week. Snow is predicted over the days with night time temps low enough to make the fake stuff, and make it they are. Both Loveland and Arapahoe Basin have their snow guns cranking in what is another typical race for bragging rights to be first open.
To date, Loveland holds the record for earliest opening ever in Colorado which happened on September 30, 1951. Arapahoe Basin not to be outdone, has the second earliest date of October 6th 2009. We’ll have to sit back and wait to see who wins the war this time around but diehard skiers are already touring in Utah. Thanks to a storm that hammered Alta with 11" on the 25th (making it the 5th snowiest September day on record) they now have a nice base.
Check out these early season pow turns, not bad, not bad at all.
If you’re still under that rock, I suggest getting your ski gear ready and moving to higher ground cause it seams the pow is about to start piling up.
