The hills are alive with the sound of ... the anthrophone?
Anthrophony: any sound produced by humans or their creations. The anthrophe is the word given to the human made soundscape, and it has a far greater impact on our lives than we may think. A more common term to describe the phenomenon is noise pollution, and the US National Park Service is quite interested in its impact; they even have a division called the Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division that studies the effects of anthropogenic noise on both humans and wildlife, and documents the benefits of its absence.
Snow covered trees go a long way to muffle sounds and create a wonderfully quiet space to escape the anthrophone.
