Yes, it's true.
Australia not only has snow, mountains and chair-lifts but a pretty healthy backcountry skiing culture. Having seen the 'snow fields' first hand last fall I was interested to learn more about the ski touring quality down under. While you may not want to put this at the top of your backcountry skiing destinations list it still looks like a lot of fun:
