Camps & Fires
A good campfire can go a long way. It can keep you warm, cook your food, dry your clothes, scare off mysterious creatures… It may be the centerpiece for songs, stories or just silence. No matter whom you are with, a campfire is always good company.
I had the opportunity to relax at a friend’s backcountry cabin for a few days. At a lower elevation most of the snow had already melted and sunny days made for spring like conditions. Once the sun fell, however, temperatures plummeted. A fire was necessary inside and out. The cabin was warm but poorly lit by the fire and candlelight, resulting in a few minor burns. Going without electricity and running water is easy when you leave the stress of the everyday grind behind. It had been too long since I turned off my cell phone, left my computer at home and found a place to disconnect from technology, and I hope it won’t be long before I can do it all again.
