The Challenges of Cave Rescue
Search and Rescue is a highly skilled process and when you add in the challenges of being down in a cave the magnitude of difficulty is exponential.
Being a long-time Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteer I recently had a great opportunity to go underground and experience rescue at the subterranean level with a team of dedicated cave rescuers.
Cave Rescue here in BC and Alberta is a separate volunteer organization from ground search and rescue and for very good reason. The environment is very challenging and the need for complicated rope systems is a must.
The old cave rescue saying is 'for every km you move a patient you'll need a day'. So an accident 4km into a cave means 4 days of rescue. YIKES!
