Frédéric Dion - Professional Adventurer
As the official spokesman for Scouts Canada, you don’t have to tell Frédéric Dion to “be prepared”. He has crossed Antarctica by kite skiing, rescued nine skiers in the Alps in 2014, ran 33 marathons in only 7 weeks and has navigated thousands of miles in the ocean. Next on his list is to be dropped off, blindfolded, in the Yukon wilderness with nothing but a scout belt; a four-pound inflatable raft, lighter, water bottle, a knife and “some little survival gear”. Food, water, shelter and some direction home will have to be searched for when Dion is heli-dropped this summer. This won’t be the first time Dion’s survival skills have been tested. He spent four days without water, food and equipment in the winter on Lake Mistassini, Quebec’s largest lake and went two weeks without survival gear in 2012.
Dion is not afraid of the bears he may encounter, but rather the cold. “It is a killer in the woods,” Dion said during a CBC radio interview, “…mentally it’s all about being able to handle the doubt, being able to accept that you don’t know where you are, and maybe it’s going to be cold, and at some point when you don’t eat for many days, it becomes a lot more challenging psychologically.”
Dion is raising money for Opération Enfant Soliel, a Quebec based charity that helps sick children and their family. Dion’s very on child needed help from them years ago and this is his way of giving back. Since 2009 he has raised more than $25,000.
