New Trail Links Squamish to Sunshine Coast
A new trail has been in the works for the last year that links Squamish to the Sunshine Coast, Port Mellon to be specific. Earlier this week the route was completed on foot for the first time by Vance Culbert in 13 hours. The 70 km long trail is currently passable however some bushwhacking and a pioneering sense of adventure is still required at this point. While a significant amount of progress has been made by volunteers there is still a lot of work to make the trail an enjoyable bike route, which is the ultimate goal. The route takes you by pristine lakes and over two mountain passes. The trail will not be officially opened until enough work has been completed to make the route enjoyable to most. The group is looking for more volunteers to complete the final push to open the Squamish to Sechelt Trail. Those who are wishing to do so should contact Richard Culbert via e-mail . rrculbert@gmail.com
Once completed the trail will be open most of the year but closed during the winter months due to snow at elevation. It seems that some think once a trail is established that the government will want to pave it to establish a road connection to the Sunshine Coast but Richard Culbert doesn't think we need to worry about that based on the terrain of the trail. I really feel Canada is lacking in theses longer point to point trails. We can only hope that this route will spark the imagination of future trail builders in Canada!
