Save Macpherson
Save Macpherson.
If you have done any cycling in or around Revelstoke then you have certainly enjoyed the cycling trails of Mount Macpherson. As the name suggests the trails are located at the base of Mount Macpherson where the nordic centre becomes a hub for local cyclists, demo days, races and events during the summer months. It features beginner trails right off the main parking area to more advanced technical riding that extends as far as the banks of the Columbia River.
In recent years the Revelstoke Cycling scene has seen hard times when the popular downhill trails on Boulder mountain were devastated by logging operations. The trails on Boulder were promptly rebuilt with the help of the RCA and the logging company itself by helping with equipment and funds. However, you can't help but notice that you are now biking in a cut block where you once biked through mature timber. While the trees will grow again over time the impact of logging will be visible for years to come. Again the RCA trails are at risk of being logged once more. This time the logging is planned for Macpherson. While the RCA has met with the logging company, the town and the province, the logging is planned to begin anytime. However from what I understand, it's not all bad. The company who will be logging the area has amended the initial blocks to help reduce the impact on the local trails. The trails at Macpherson will be rebuilt as with Boulder, but again we stand to loose the charm of cycling through mature timber.
A “ Save Macpherson “ Initiative has been picking up steam and needs the support of not just the locals but those who travel to the area to bike our trails. It is that demographic that has local economy dollars associated with it and thus carries a little more weight at the discussion table. It is important that areas such as these are protected from logging so that they can be enjoyed without interruption. Please visit the Save Macpherson website and show your support.
