Skiing the Utah Backcountry. Or at least trying to.
Last winter the Backcountry Skiing Canada crew set out for a week of skiing in Utah. We planned on getting into the backcountry via several resorts even though the outlook was bleak. Turns out we hit the biggest week all season.
“I haven’t seen it this bad in the 11 years I’ve been out here,” said a Utahan in January. Not really the kind of beta you want to hear before embarking on a trip—but we, the ever-optimistic Backcountry Skiing Canada crew, were committed. You all know the anxiety. Will the snow be good? Will the terrain be good? Regardless, we headed to the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market trade show and, ostensibly, some of the slackcountry terrain around Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, Solitude and Powder Mountain in Utah, the state boasting “the greatest snow on earth.”
