The Renewal Workshop - An idea whose time has come
Having just returned from Deer Valley and the 2016 Outdoor Press Camp where I met with several outdoor adventure brands to learn about their products and services, there was one company that stood out above the rest.
This is the story of ’The Renewal Workshop’ and the reason that it’s important is that we live in a world with seemingly unlimited outdoor clothing choices and we should pause for a moment and consider what happens to all those garments before they even get to retail stores or after it’s life cycle is complete. Not all products are produced equally and some never make it to your local store due to manufacturing defects. Most of the time these defects are not cost effective for the manufacturer to correct so the garment is destined for the landfill. Another scenario may be that you return a product to a brand due to a warranty issue such as a broken zipper. Again, if the time and effort required to fix the garment is deemed too great, then the item will simply be thrown in the trash.
The Renewal Workshop however sees value in this clothing, not only in a monetary sense but also in simply reducing the amount of waste in the outdoor clothing industry. They will invest the time and effort required to fix the problem and get the product ready for resale in the market place. The Renewal Workshop will also recycle or upcycle clothing that can’t be fixed.
