Mosquito Ck. and Wolverine Bowl, Jan 10-11
Spent some time this weekend roaming the E-facing slopes above
Mosquito Ck.
It took only a few feet of trail breaking at valley bottom to really drive
home the message that we weren't skiing around Nelson anymore!
The facet wallowing continued up to about 2100m where things started
to stiffen up. In the open alpine, conditions were very supportive with
about 20cm of unconsolidated snow over a stiff midpack (that must've
been quite the series of inversions to weld things together like that!?).
There were lots of old tracks that had started to drift in to which we added
a few of our own.
…sporting newly locked-down heels! Another kneedragger leaves the
dark side
On sunday, hoping again for good things in the alpine, we headed out
to Wolverine/Purple bowl behind LLSH.
Off the beaten path, trail breaking was accurately described in a recent
parks public bulletin as "hateful" and I can't really improve on that
description.
Higher up, things went to the opposite end of the spectrum with
wall-to-wall wind slab, breakable crust and exposed rock which made
for enjoyable turns in flat light.
This winter has been a pretty wild ride so far!
ps: hmmm, still figuring out the in's and out's of posting on this
forum… sorry for the additional edits.
