PHOTO COMP - Trophy Hut, Wells Gray
This is from a 4-day stay at the Trophy Hut in Wells Gray Provincial Park back in January of this year. The two-storey hut is well-equipped and even has a sauna to relax the muscles at the end of the day! We found a huge amount of terrain to explore with a super-deep snow pack consisting of a nice fluff on top. In this late-day photo we’re touring back up to the hut after spending the day checking out the West Raft River Valley (the one that contains the approach road).
Here’s the SECRET to this valley that I found: on the final slope before hitting valley bottom, there is a cut block that offers GREAT skiing. It’s hit-and-miss to find it on the first run down if you don’t know where it is, but once at the bottom at the road you should be able to spot it and then spend the day doing more laps on it! If you want a longer lap, you can continue up into the trees to add a bit more elevation to your lap as there are some nice glades.
