Red Resort and Salomon presented The Gathering 5.0
Red Resort was again the place to be this long weekend for the 5th installment of Salomon's Gathering. With temps creeping up above the 15 degree mark it sure felt like a spring beach party on the mountain with corn snow being the dish of the day. On both Saturday and Sunday there were plenty of free backcountry events taking place all over the mountain and a good selection of next years Salomon goodies to take for a test drive.
At the base of the mountain the Salomon tent was stock piled with plenty of skis to demo and even a few that you can't get your hands on until next season like the Salomon Q98 and our favorite the Salomon Q105. We were lucky enough to get a pair of each of these for testing this year so we will have a fall review live in our review section for you fall 2013, so be sure not to miss that.

We took in the weenie roast at the top on Grey Mountain and even though there has been a free cat ride to the top all season (prior to the new chair going in next season) we decided to do things the old fashioned way and skinned to the top. After all, it's only a 15 minute climb and you barely break a sweat. On the summit there was plenty of fun and a fire pit to roast hot dogs if you needed some fuel after your climb (or cat ride).
For the details on this route check it out in our route section or have a look at all the details on our Suunto Moves Count page here.
After a day on the hill we headed on over to Rossland's Flying Steam Shovel restaurant to hear 'Rad' Brad Vancour's Warren Miller escapades from years gone by and to close out the night we took in the All-Star Film & Photo Night part II. With Nelson's own Mitchell Scott at the helm we were entertained by the likes of Jeff Schmuck (his real name), Steve Ogle (another Nelson talent) and my favorite of the night Dane Tudor. Dane took us through his career from child shredder at Red Resort to where he is now and hit not only the highlights of his career but also some of his more prolific spills and injuries – truly inspiring.
The Gathering always proves to be a good time so give it a go next year if you happen to be in the neighbourhood and even if you're not it's a great excuse to make the trip to Rossland–like you need one?
