Avalanche fatality in Glacier National Park - Roger Pass
Over the weekend on Sunday March 24th a 38 year old Revelstoke man identified as Jason Chad Westbury was killed in an avalanche. It occurred on Mount Sifton just below the col at approximately 2:00 pm. The victim was buried but his two companions were able to dig him out and start CPR then one person went for help. When Parks Canada arrives via helicopter it was too late and Westbury had died.
The two other skiers were not hurt in the incident and were flown from the area by helicopter. This is the second avalanche death in B.C. in the past two days as a snowmobiler was killed in a slide west of Kimberley the day before.
The Canadian Avalanche Centre had issued a warning for the interior of B.C. over the weekend. Given the inviting sunny weather everyone in the backcountry should use extra caution.
