10 Backcountry Essentials
We all have our backcountry packing systems that work best for our own adventures. There are some items I never leave the house without, for example, and an old friend once told me he survived 10 days in the backcountry with only a multi-tool and a rubber band. The Scouts have guidelines for backcountry survival and include these ten essentials:
- Navigation
- Sun Protection
- Insulation
- Illumination
- First Aid Kit
- Fire
- Repair Kit
- Nutrition
- Hydration
- Emergency Shelter
I’m guilty of leaving many of these items at home and therefore am ill equipped if disaster strikes. But that’s part of the adventure I suppose. Other safety nets include a cell phone or communication device, padding & other safety equipment, and maybe bear spray? What else do you bring to feel safer in the backcountry?
