Avalanche Conditions Report: Time to be cautious as the hazard continues to be elevated
Current avalanche conditions could be considered rather spicey given the last two major avalanche cycles. Between December 20-23rd close to 100cm of heavy snow fell which put a significant load on an already weak snowpack. During this time avalanches up to size 3 we reported and triggered with explosives, some taking out 15-20-year-old trees! After this, a further 20cm of really light snow fell and then surface hoar began to grow which was again buried yesterday by 30cm of heavy snow that created a touchy storm slab.
We are expecting to receive a good amount of snow between now and the end of next week so be aware that the avalanche hazard will be HIGH as this storm slab continues to build.
