Large Natural Avalanche On SE Aspect Of Ymir Peak
A size 3 Natural avalanche released yesterday (Jan 26) off the SE Aspect of Ymir Peak.
The crowns were approximately 980m wide and ran 1090m long, almost full path. The crown depth is estimated to be 40-100cm deep. The elevation of the crowns is @ 2300m.There was significant warming on solar aspects with afternoon temperatures reaching +5C. The slide was observed from the air @ 1530hrs. There was another size 2 natural on Goat slide around the same time. The warming trend is ending today with a cold front gradually seeping into the area bringing isolated flurries and some sunny periods.
As the temperatures cool, things will tighten up – but as this year's snowpack has proven to be very tricky and unpredictable, I would still treat the terrain with caution. As a wise man once said "when stability is the question, terrain is the answer"
Play safe out there,
