Avalanche Death south of Smithers
Officials will try again today to recover the body of a snowmobiler killed on the weekend south of Smithers. The man was killed as he photographed another sledder highmarking on a snow-covered slope. The avalanche engulfed a man at the bottom of the hill after the second man had climbed up the slope, triggering the avalanche. The second sledder tried to dig his friend out, but couldn't rescue him in time. The incident happened about 20 kilometers south of Smithers in a popular area known as the Microwave Trail. There are very dangerous conditions in the Smithers area today, and Search and Rescue officials are waiting for specialists from Terrace to arrive before they try and go in to get the body.
