Soap Box Comp- The Spearhead Traverse Video
Gary and I had trained and waited for 2 year waiting for a weather window to be on a weekend and to be fit enough to complete this traverse in one day. There is a real push to have 3 huts built for average people to be able to complete this traverse more like it is in Europe. I wanted to complete this ski tour before the hords and guides take over this challenging tour.
It is a committing tour as once you start there is a real chance you can get lost in the clouds and get disorientated not knowing where exactly you are on the mountain and miss the key entry points into each mountain col. There is the real danger of falling in a crevasse as there is a dozen of glaciers to cross and roping up will slow us down too much to be able to do it in one day. Normally this traverse normally takes 2 to 4 day depending on the fitness level of the weakest member. With 35km to cover and numerous ups and downs totalling 8800 feet of cumulative elevation gain we will feel this one at the end of the day.
What is really amazing is how this route goes through big mountain country, yet it manages to thread its way through these spectacular peaks via relatively gentle glaciers in between a myriad of high cols.
I only carried enough gear and food for the day trip and if we were to get caught out overnight we would be in for a really tough night. I decided to only bring one camera and film while we were on the move with 18 or so transitions from up to down hill mode there was no time to waste.
I did this video a little different as it is continuous from Blackcomb to Whistler in order with the mountains tagged so you can recognize the mountains when you have your turn doing this trip rated as one of the top 50 traverses in North America. The video is fast paced as is the traverse and I hopes it holds you attention for 4 minutes.
Hope you enjoy this.
