Arc’teryx ATOM SL Anorak 
Anoraks are making a comeback these days and Arc’teryx is getting in on the action with their new for Spring 2021 ATOM SL Anorak. Kodiak is a Canadian company that has been making boots and shoes since 1910 and in 2010 they outfitted the Canadian Olympic team athletes. In 2017 they became part of the VF Corporation which runs such iconic outdoor companies as The North Face, Smartwool, Vans and Timberland. As a teenager, I remember everyone wearing Kodiak steel toe winter boots to school since they were the coolest thing around at the time. This means that in a water column test it has a hydrostatic head of 10,000 mm while still having a vapour permeability rating of 10,000 g/m2/24h. 5.11 Tactical Pants
5.11 Tactical (not to be confused with Five Ten Shoes) got its start in the public safety and first responder community in 1992 when the FBI training academy started using its original 5.11 pant. They expanded from there to create a more extensive line of law enforcement apparel in 2003. They’ve now expanded into the outdoor and fitness markets with products such as the 5.11 Ridge Pants and 5.11 Decoy Pants that we’ll look at closer here.

5.11 Ridge Pants
Given 5.11’s origins, it’s no wonder that they’ve incorporated a few SERC (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) features into their Ridge Pants. Big Agnes Fly Creek HV UL2 Solution Dye Tent
We initially reviewed the Big Agnes Fly Creek Platinum Tent back in 2016 and were impressed but Big Agnes didn’t rest on their laurels and new for this spring is the Big Agnes Fly Creek HV UL2 Solution Dye Tent. This is an updated version of the three-season, semi-free-standing ultralight Fly Creek Tent with several new improvements and features. As you may have noticed in the name the Fly Creek HV UL2 Tent is now solution dyed which means that Big Agnes uses 50% less water, 80% less energy, and 80% fewer chemicals to dye the fabrics. This is a significant reduction in carbon emissions and water requirements, yet the fabric is still highly resistant to UV fade. Big Agnes is the first company to introduce a solution-dyed tent body and fly fabrics—Bravo Big Agnes.

Petzl ZIPKA + CORE
While the Petzl ZIPKA + CORE are not new for Spring 2021, they are a classic that is worth including in this list of must-have gear. G3 PIVOT TREK Poles
Based on G3’s innovative PIVOT Splitboard Poles which we awarded our Gear of the Year Award last season, G3’s new PIVOT TREK Poles are a durable folding trekking pole with impressive packability and strength. Thanks to magnets built into the baskets, the PIVOT TREK Poles wrap compactly around themselves and lock securely so you can store them inside your pack or lash them to the outside easily. This nested format ensures that there are no loose ends or pole segments flapping about which is not the case with most collapsable trekking poles. The PIVOT TREK Poles use a lightweight aluminum construction and are engineered for strength and durability so you could even use them in winter for skiing, you just need to switch out the baskets with G3’s All Mountain Baskets that are sold separately. Just below the main grip of the PIVOT there is an extended soft foam grip with a dual-density plastic upper that provides a comfortable grip when you need to choke down while crossing steep slopes. If you need to choke down even further there are two integrated metal rings that provide plenty of purchase lower down the poles. Nothing takes a beating more than luggage and no one knows how to over engineer products better than YETI.
