The potential is outstanding from this single hut including summer hikes to Asulkan Pass or up the Great Glacier Trail to the Illicilewaet Glacier, summer climbs to Sapphire Col, Mt. The Asulkan Cabin is situated at the head of the Asulkan Valley, in Glacier National Park, at 2100 metres, in the middle of some of the best skiing in Rogers Pass. Rogers Pass arguably has some of the best backcountry ski touring anywhere. Add up those facts and it’s pretty clear that this is a good place to be if you are as backcountry skier.
The Seven Steps of Paradise, Asulkan Pass, Sapphire Col and the Dome Glacier can be reached as day trips from the hut. If things are sketchy, there’s great skiing to be had on the Triangle Moraine and the Tree Triangle directly below the hut.

Battle Abbey offers exceptional Selkirk Mountain skiing right out the front door. The lodge is perched at 2,200 m (7,200 ft) near the headwaters of Butters Creek. The peaks here are mainly granitic and there are several classic routes of various lengths and difficulty to challenge all types of climbers. In winter the snow comes early and in huge quantities, allowing for a myriad of touring and ski-mountaineering possibilities that are second to none. "The Bill Putnam (Fairy Meadow) Hut is one of the great backcountry ski destinations in Canada. The snow is deep, the runs are excellent and the hut is very comfortable." The Glacier Circle Cabin is located near a small lake in the deep cirque bound by Mt. Macoun, Mt. Fox, Mt Selwyn and Mt. Topham. The cabin is usually accessed via the Illecillewaet Neve (14 km from the Illecillewaet campground). Cable Car Bridge on Beaver Valley access is closed due to riverbank erosion. Most popular access is the Illecillewaet route, then Deville Glacier route. Knowledge of safe glacier travel techniques and whiteout navigation skills are required.

The Sand Creek Valley is a magical place situated in on the other side of the mountain from Island Lake Lodge and Fernie Alpine Resort. The area has endless opportunity to fulfill your never ending quest for deep steep powder. The Little Sand cabin is an absolute Mecca for the winter sports enthusiast, in particular backcountry skiing, and snowmobile assisted skiing. There is an amazing annual snow accumulation in excess of 7m. Along with the amazing snow there are also hundreds of acres of gladed treed areas. It is a powder skiing, touring experience that cannot be beat. Along with the Little Sand Cabin we also have other cabins in the general area. Adults can access backcountry skiing adjacent to Goat Range Provincial Park, such as 2000` tree runs, the classic 4500` descent of Mt Brennan and 2000`+ descents on London Ridge. Location makes it convenient for guests with snowmobiles to access ski terrain along FSR roads in the greater area. Sapphire Col Hut is a basic mountaineering shelter. Apart from a few utensils and a toilet system, this metal bivouac shelter is unequipped; with no heat, stove or sleeping pads. Water is obtained from a nearby melt pond or by melting snow.
Located at Sapphire Col between The Dome and Castor Peaks on the Asulkan ridge, attaining the Sapphire Col Hut requires mountaineering equipment and skills. Sapphire Col is above the tree line in serious avalanche terrain and requires travel on a crevassed glacier. Knowledge of safe glacier travel techniques and whiteout navigation skills are required.

Perched at 2200m (7200 ft.) in the Albert Icefield area east of Revelstoke, Selkirk Lodge commands a backcountry skiing paradise. The chalet overlooks a valley of breathtaking beauty, with spectacular views in every direction. Outstanding ski touring awaits you right outside the door. Selkirk Lodge is cozy and comfortable, with indoor plumbing, sauna, shower, 12V solar powered electric light and limited internet access. The Lodge accommodates twelve guests in two-, three- and four-person bedrooms, all with fluffy down duvets. In the morning, we like to use the “bacon alarm”, a very effective awakener! Flavorful locally roasted coffee and a substantial and tasty breakfast get our guests going. After a fun filled day in Selkirk “champagne” powder, folks relax over a scrumptious après ski snack, while the cooks concoct another delicious dinner. Access to Selkirk Lodge is by helicopter only. Guests are driven from Revelstoke to Albert Canyon, 35 km east of town. From there a short flight brings them to the center of the powder skiing universe. Ski! Enjoy! Repeat!

Valhalla Mountain lodge is “Playground of the Valhallas”. As one of the first backcountry lodges in the Valhallas, we had the pick of the crop and chose this spot for its diverse terrain, incredible snow and spectacular scenery. Situated at 2100 metres, Valhalla lodge offers access to 12 alpine bowls, long tree runs, and an epic 1300 metre leg burner! For those looking to take it easy, there are numerous 300-1000 metre classic runs within a 30-minute hike from the lodge. The lodge offers five separate bedrooms, solar power, lighting, wood heat, cedar sauna and BBQ. Ski trips are available in the winter and hiking in summer.

The Bonnington Range is part of the Selkirks and features 12 peaks over 2100m (7000’). Four rustic cabins, about 10km apart, offer shelter and basic amenities. Access to any of these cabins is through wilderness areas and good route finding skills are essential. Traverses are possible between the huts (see our route description of the Bonnington Traverse), or you can just go to one hut and tour around the area. GRASSY HUT

The U-shaped Grassy Mountain has a lower-summit on the southern side of the U, called South Grassy. Grassy Hut sits at the U’s midpoint at 1900m, just under the Grassy/South Grassy Mountain pass. As far as amenities go, it (and all the cabins in the Bonningtons) are pretty basic. Four bunks (but no mattresses, so bring one), your standard bench table, and a little wood stove to keep you toasty. You’ll find the necessary cooking utensils (pots, pans, cups, bowls, plates, cutlery, etc.) in a plastic bin. A two- burner Coleman Stove and Coleman Lantern are there too—be sure to bring mantels and white gas because these are not provided. There is no water at the hut at any time of the year so plan on packing it in, melting snow or finding an open creek. A two hectare area surrounding the hut is designated “sled free.”
STEED CABIN

Steed Cabin is located at 2100m, due south of the Siwash Mountain summit (2320m), by a small tarn. Siwash is the highest summit in the Bonnington Range. The cabin’s upstairs loft can sleep four (there are no mattresses so pack one in). The ground floor features the usual table, bench and a little wood stove. In a pinch, two more can sleep on the fist floor (check with the KMC on this). The necessary cooking utensils (pots, pans, cups, bowls, plates, cutlery, etc.) are also always there in a plastic bin. A two-burner Coleman Stove and Coleman Lantern are there too—but be sure to bring mantels and white gas because these are not provided. There is no water at this cabin so be prepared to melt snow or pack it in.
Also, be forewarned that the area around Steed is popular with sledders so you’ll likely see them during your visit. Unlike Copper or Grassy, there is no ban on motorized vehicles around the hut.
COPPER MOUNTAIN HUT

Access: Ski in winter, hike in summer. Getting into the Copper Mountain Cabin in winter is very difficult. The summer route crosses extensive avalanche paths and is unsafe for most of the winter. It is possible to access the cabin from roads in the Snowwater Creek drainage but it can be very tricky—expect to use your route finding skills. Most people stay at this cabin as part of a traverse and are coming from the Steed Cabin. For detailed directions to Grassy Hut have a read over here.
Sitting in the trees at around 2000m in a basin on the southwest face of the mountain with the same name, Copper Mountain Cabin features a two hectare sled-free zone around it. The cabin sleeps four with two “cozy” bunks (bring your own mattresses) and features a little wood stove, basic bench and table.
As with all cabins on the Bonnington Traverse, cooking utensils (pots, pans, cups, bowls, plates, cutlery, etc.) live in a plastic bin which you’ll find easily. A two-burner white gas Coleman Stove and Coleman Lantern are also there for your use (bring spare mantels and white gas). There’s no water at this cabin so be ready to melt snow.
HUCKLEBERRY HUT

Access: Access to the Huckleberry Hut is via Porto Rico Road, 15 km south of Nelson off Highway 6. Ski up Porto Rico Road from the highway for about six kilometres where an old road heads off to the left. Continue along here for the remaining two kilometres to the cabin. Originally built as a mining cabin, the Huckleberry Hut now lives on for the pleasure of hikers and backcountry skiers. The cozy hut (let’s call in tiny) sits at around 1600m in the valley below Midday and Cabin Peaks. There are two bunks (bring a mattress) which will each sleep two people sleeping in different directions. You’ll find the necessary cooking utensils (pots, pans, cups, bowls, plates, cutlery, etc.) in the plastic bin on the floor. A two- burner Coleman Stove and Coleman Lantern are there too—be sure to bring mantels and white gas because these are not provided. A fold-down table, wood stove and outhouse are also available for use. The good news is that here at the Huckleberry, water is available from a stream that crosses the road about 100m beyond the cabin.
