Rab Ascendor Hoody
Everyone needs a warm breathable mid-layer for when the cooler days of fall roll in and ultimately change to winter. A base layer that can go from the hiking trail to the skin track and provide good mobility and temperature regulation is key for active pursuits. Rab’s new Ascendor Hoody is just this thanks to its body-mapped design and grid fleece fabrics which provide a good amount of insulation but also the breathability you need to push your abilities. Ole Andreas Devold created a textile factory in 1853 and 170 years later this Norwegian company is known for their high-quality merino wool base layers such as the Kvitegga Woman Cross Neck. This woman’s baselayer is ideal for colder conditions where more insulation is needed but what makes this top truly unique is its reversibility. Thanks to its jacquard knit it can be worn with either side against your body providing two tops for the price of one and also extending your style options for longer multi-day adventures. This dual-function reversibility also means that you’ll need to take along fewer clothes—saving on overall pack weight and time spent washing them. Made with 100% merino wool, the Kvitegga Woman Cross Neck has built-in anti-microbial and thermoregulation properties and wool’s built-in air pockets provide heat storage which helps keep you warmer longer, especially for those days with lower intensity activities. The high protective neck and lower back panel add to its warmth by helping to keep the cold at bay. Style, function and comfort are combined in this reasonably priced Merino wool base layer that we are sure will quickly become one of your favourites.

Giro Tenet MIPS Helmet
Giro’s new Tenet Mips is an all-mountain helmet featuring a hybrid construction. It uses a lightweight in-moulded lower and a more durable hard-shell upper with built-in ventilation along with sidewalls for added protection and style. Giro was able to make the Tenet light yet durable while still being incredibly safe thanks to the helmet’s impact-absorbing lightweight EPS foam liner and MIPS technology. MIPS or Multi-Directional Impact Protection System which provides more protection in angled impacts. The three main components of the MIPS system are the Interior foam liner, the low friction liner and an elastomeric attachment system connecting the two. This elastomeric attachment system stretches to allow the foam liner to rotate independently around your head to further reduce rotational forces.
To help control the Tenet’s airflow, Giro has equipped it with Thermostat Control™ adjustable venting. This allows custom-tuning of airflow instantly with a simple, low-profile control button on the outside of the helmet. To provide maximum fit and comfort the Tenet uses a Form™2 Fit System which is lighter and lower-profile than the original. Even with gloves on you can dial in a custom fit in seconds. Designed and built to fit with all of Giro’s goggles, the new Tenet Helmet will keep you safe and ensure you look good by eliminating any gaper gap.

Thermarest Hyperion -6C/20F Sleeping Bag
While not new for 2023, the Therm-a-Rest Hyperion Sleeping Bag is a standout when compared to any other sleeping bag in its class. It comes in a -6°C/20°F and 0°C/32°F versions and is crazy light, compact and warm. Placing the down where it is most effective (70% on the top and sides with 30% on the back) is called Zonal Insulation and maximizes warmth while saving on weight and reducing the overall cost of the sleeping bag. Combining this with an ergonomic shape and a longer zipper provides a comfortable but not confined fit which Therm-a-Rest’s calls their “Comfort Fit”.
To help keep the Hyperion Sleeping Bag on your sleeping mat, Therm-a-Rest has integrated SynergyLink Connectors which effectively integrate the bag with the mattress below for optimal comfort. MEC Radiator Down Lite hoodie
Combining premium materials with quality design and manufacturing at a reasonable price is the holy grail of apparel design and MEC has seemingly cracked this code with their new Radiator Down Lite hoodie. At just $249.95CAN, the Radiator Down Lite hoodie is almost half the price of the competition.
The Radiator Down Lite hoodie uses 850 fill-power certified responsible goose down along with other Bluesign approved materials which means MEC didn’t cut any corners when it came to the Radiator’s materials. To eliminate feathers from migrating through the face fabric, MEC has used a woven baffle chamber construction which eliminates stitch lines. This also means that the Radiator Down Lite hoodie will retain heat better since it cannot escape as quickly through the stitching as it does in a traditionally stitched down jacket. Features include a built in hood with elastic edge binding around the face, a zippered internal pocket which doubles as a stuff sack and a drawcord-adjustable hem that can be adjusted from inside the hand pockets.
The more minimal design of the Radiator Down Lite hoodie means it packs down super small and is not as hot as a full blown down jacket making it ideal for alpine climbing, mountaineering, backcountry skiing, or fall hiking.

Outdoor Research Trailbreaker Tour Pants
Ski touring pants have to be able to shed snow while breathing exceptionally well. They don’t have to be as weather-resistant as resort ski pants and are typically made from a soft shell material rather than a waterproof/breathable Gore-Tex-like fabric. Outdoor Research has combined these two properties in their new Trailbreaker Tour Pants which use a bluesign® approved stretch-woven softshell upper with waterproof fabric in the lower legs. This provides great breathability up top around the waist and thighs and more durable weather protection on the lower legs which will come into contact with snow and moisture.
The Trailbreaker has been in the Outdoor Research lineup for many years and this new Trailbreaker Tour Pant version integrates everything backcountry skiers love about the original Trailbreaker while integrating incremental technology and feature upgrades. A new fabric in the waterproof section sheds snow more effectively, and hand pockets that are easier to distinguish from the huge ventilated side zips are another big upgrade. Additionally, new side-set thigh pockets allow for more effective and accessible organization than the previous pockets on the back of the legs. The stretchy, movement-mirroring fabric found in the Trailbreaker Tour Pants provides a full range of motion along with a comfortable fit and lots of pockets for storage including a transceiver pocket with a built-in clip.
Lightweight, durable, and weather resistant the new Trailbreaker Tour Pants are an all-in-one, versatile solution for backcountry touring and ski mountaineering so be sure to check them out.

Coltex Todi Crystal Mix Skins
Colltex’s best-selling skins, get their namesake from Tödi Mountain in the Glarus Alps of Switzerland. This mountain massif rises 3,613m or 11,854ft culminating in a peak called Piz Russein which is the highest mountain in the region. Colltex was founded in 1948 by Hans Fischli and was initially called “Tödi Sport” after the mountain, that was until the 1960s when the company began to focus on climbing skins and was credited with the invention of the first self-adhesive climbing skins. Today Colltex is one of the few manufacturers to forgo the use of environmentally harmful fluorine to waterproof their skins. They also use a Drybase process to seal the back of the skins, the result is an optimal adhesive bond and a superior performing and more durable product.
The Todi Crystal Skins provide the best combination of glide, traction, and durability while maintaining a very manageable packing size. Their fabric composition is made up of 65% mohair and 35% polyamide to take advantage of the grip/glide beneficial properties of both materials. The 35% polyamide also vastly improves the skin’s abrasion resistance and durability so they will not only perform better but also last longer.
Inspired by nature, Coltex started with the snow crystal and used the crystal shape, the hexagon, as the basis for their new designs, constructions, shapes, and patterns. The newly designed hexagon front/rear attachments work with any shape/size ski and are also stable and light. Good for all types of snow and weather and equally suitable for beginners as they are for the seasoned pro, the Coltex Todi Crystal Mix Skins do it all. You can order un-cut or also custom ordered tailored made skins specifically for your ski's dimensions.

NEMO Tensor Extreme Conditions Ultralight Insulated Sleeping Pad
Nemo has always been one of our favourite tent and sleeping bag brands and their Tensor line of sleeping pads have always performed well. New for this fall NEMO has added a new lighter-weight sleeping pad to the Tensor line-up which is called the Extreme Conditions Ultralight Insulated Sleeping Pad on the count it is built incredibly tough yet still super warm and light. The new Tensor Extreme Conditions Pad uses what NEMO calls their Apex baffle internal structure which helps to eliminate springiness and bounce within the pad. By using distinctly shaped baffles, the Apex design evenly suspends four layers of insulating Thermal Mirror™ film inside the pad. This floating construction prevents that annoyingly loud crinkling sound found in other sleeping pads. It also allows NEMO to achieve an impressive 8.5 R-value with an overall weight of just one pound. This is the highest warmth-to-weight ratio of any sleeping pad available. With 3.5 inches of height, the Tensor Extreme Conditions Ultralight Insulated Sleeping Pad is incredibly comfortable yet packs down as small as a Nalgene water bottle.
NEMO also built-in improved puncture-resistance and strength into the Tensor Extreme Conditions Pad by using a 40D nylon bottom fabric to protect the pad on tougher terrain while the premium 20D nylon top material provides a soft, lightweight sleep surface. NEMO also integrated an improved Laylow™ valve which significantly improved the performance and ease of use in all conditions — especially colder temperatures. Inflation is easy with the included Vortex™ pump sack without introducing excess moisture into the pad. And when it comes time to deflate the pad you simply open the Laylow valves and it expels all the air instantly.
This four-season pad is truly remarkable, the innovative engineering and design ensure that it is warm, comfortable, and durable while still being compact and lightweight.
Ortovox Swisswool Piz Segnas Jacket
Ortovox’s Swisswool Piz Segnas Jacket is a warm mid-layer for skiing the resort or backcountry that also looks good around town thanks to its unique colour, casual cut and striking quilted pattern. It has a streamlined design that isn’t overloaded with features so that it can focus on keeping you warm yet still being lightweight and packable. This highly functional jacket provides cozy warmth under a hardshell or as an outer layer on warmer days. Ortovox has been using Swisswool which is sustainable wool insulation from Switzerland as insulation material since 2011. 90 g/m² of Swisswool insulation can be found on the front, back, shoulders and outer sleeves of the Piz Segnas Jacket. A lighter 60 g/m² synthetic lining is used on the sides, inner sleeves and underarms of the jacket to dissipate heat where you create it most. This zonal construction provides the benefit of both materials with the Swisswool keeping you warm (even when wet) and the polyamide providing freedom of movement and compatibility. The Piz Segnas Jacket has an elastic, wind-resistant, extremely breathable TEC-STRETCH outer material which can take on any weather.
It has a backpack-optimized Napoleon pocket which provides space for a phone or snack within easy reach. The jacket has no hood to make it easier to layer but does have a high collar with discreet edging that can also be found on the cuffs. This jacket is climate neutral and was produced in the most environmentally friendly way possible with unavoidable CO2 emissions being offset. It is made in Europe and is also PFC-free.
Garmin Fenix 7S Pro Solar
Garmin’s Fenix 7 line of Multisport GPS Watches comes in three face sizes—the 42mm Fenix 7S (or small), 47mm Fenix 7 and 51mm Fenix 7X—all of which come in standard, solar and sapphire solar options and now Solar Pro.
The Fenix 7 Pro is the latest in Garmin’s smartwatch wearable technology with the biggest improvement being a new Optical Heart Rate Sensor, Software updates and an integrated flashlight which is now standard no matter which size of Fenix 7 Pro Solar you choose. The new Gen 5 Elevate Optical heart rate sensor uses 6 LEDs for more accurate measurements along with a new algorithm to process the results more accurately.
While the flashlight option is not new to the Fenix lineup it is new to the smaller 42 and 47mm watch options as it was previously only available on the 7X version. The flashlight provides about 16 lux of output which is about 1/2 as bright as your iPhone 4 but still provides an impressive amount of light when you need it. There are four different brightness levels options to choose from along with a red light option for when you don’t want to disturb anyone who is sleeping.
The Fenix 7 Pro of course has all the features of the Fenix 7 such as the touch screen interface, Multi-band GPS, and improved battery life thanks to the larger more efficient solar panel located on the screen bevel. You also get all world maps for free and a new Ski View that shows ski resorts and run names across the world. If you want to customize your Fenix 7X you can now configure the Fenix 7X watch directly from the smartphone app and you can also download apps from the Garmin Connect IQ Store directly on the watch with no need to do this from the smartphone app any longer.
You can expect a maximum battery life with GPS use of 90 hours/162 hours with solar charging (assumed all-day wear with 3 hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions). In Battery Saver Watch Mode the Fenix 7 Pro will last up to 38 days/87 days with solar. If you use the smartwatch options then you can expect 11/14 days with solar. In expedition mode, the battery will last up to 26 days or 43 days with solar and when using all satellite systems and playing music you can expect up to 7 hours of battery life.
The Fenix 7 is a very impressive multisport GPS watch and Garmin has only improved upon this with the latest Fenix 7 Pro version which is why it is our watch of choice for backcountry skiing and summer adventure and it should be yours too.

Black Diamond First Light Stretch Hoody
Black Diamond’s First Light Stretch Hoody is a four-season insulated jacket that breathes extremely well and won’t inhibit your movement thanks to its super stretch design and fabrics. The First Light Stretch Hoody has been in Black Diamond’s lineup for a few years now but this new version has been completely overhauled and is more streamlined and breathable thanks to the strategic fabric placement and body mapping design. It uses migration-resistant Primaloft Gold Active insulation on the front, top of the arms and around the shoulders where more warmth is required. Montana Adrenaline Skins
Montana’s Adrenaline Skins use the company’s proprietary Fusiontec adhesive which is a glueless technology that is sticky yet easy to clean with dish soap and water. This adhesion system means the skins are lighter than traditional glue skins but they are still very durable and perform well.
Made from a 65% Mohair / 35% Nylon mix, the Adrenaline Skins combine mohair and synthetic fibre to provide a robust grip and smooth glide while still being quite abrasion resistant. The nylon content extends the skin’s life and provides excellent climbing properties with an excellent glide in all temperature ranges. The skin pile is equipped with a hydrophobic coating which remains permanently water-repellent and keeps the skins light on warmer days as they will not absorb water.
If a glueless climbing skin is not what you are after Montana also has traditional glue skins in the form of their Montana MontaSprint Skins. These skins are 100% Mohair for optimal glide and grip and this natural fibre remains supple at low temperatures as well as durable, they are priced at $230US.
Outdoor Research Deviator Hoody
The Deviator Hoody has been in Outdoor Research’s lineup for several years now, in fact, we reviewed a much earlier version of it way back in 2018. A lot has changed with the Deviator Hoody since this time but it remains a lightweight and breathable cool weather jacket with just the right amount of wind protection and insulator for high-output activities.
It uses an innovative insulation called VerticalX™ Octa which does not require an interior liner fabric and has an open structure, allowing it to breathe more effectively. It's also 50% lighter than traditional polyester insulation, has an outstanding warmth-to-weight ratio, is superb at wicking moisture, and is soft against the skin. This is paired with hybrid-mapped ActiveTemp™ fabrics so that you have more insulation where you need it and less where you don’t like under the arms and on the back of the jacket. A 20D stretch-woven softshell fabric is used on the front, shoulders, sleeves, and hood of the Deviator Hoody to provide weather resistance and a breathable polyester/spandex grid fleece is found on the back, side panels, and under the arms to provide greater mobility and a full range of motion.
The Deviator Hoody is built for a wide range of high-energy activities in cooler weather such as trail running, hiking and ski touring. The Deviator Hoodie retains warmth when you’re stationary and sheds heat when you’re moving.
