Klean Kanteen - the original PBA free, Stainless Steel Bottles
A number of years ago I worked in a gear store here in Canada around the time when people started to think about what plastic was doing to their drinking water. At the time I remember that there were really not a lot of alternatives to plastic bottles. There were aluminum bottles with an epoxy resin lining inside – but I often wondered if they were banged up would the coating crack and what was that resin made of anyhow? (It's since been revealed that those bottle linings did contain BPA). Then Klean Kanteen turned up in the store and they were a hit. Finally, there was an uncomplicated, non-toxic, stainless steel solution for carrying water.
Recently Klean Kanteen have raised the bar again with the Reflect Kanteen. Not only is it a beautiful looking bottle, it's made only with three materials – laser-etched steel, silicone and sustainably harvest bamboo. This bottle is durable and is as pure as the snow you will melt or the alpine stream you'll syphon.
Here's the low down on Klean Kanteen and their bottles.
- All Klean Kanteen bottles are toxin-free and Bisphenol A (BPA) free. To learn more about BPA, it's effects and how to avoid it visit their website: http://www.kleankanteen.com/ab.....ut/bpa.php
- High-quality durable food-grade stainless steel is used, which doesn't retain odours/flavours.
- Thicker stainless steel is used than many other brands so they don't dent as easily and are built to last.
- Klean Kanteen bottles won't end up in the gyre http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_gyre – every bottle is 100% recyclable (though can't imagine why you would need to recycle it).
- Every Klean Kanteen is made from pieces of stainless steel welded together by hand then electropolished. So each bottle is Handcrafted!
- Bottles have curvy corners and rounded threads so there is no accumulation of dirt and bacteria. Also makes it easier to clean.
- Large-mouth openings make the bottles easy to clean and make it easy to transfer liquids (aka melted snow).
- The bottles come in big sizes. 64 oz (approx. 1.9L, $32.95) is the largest size. For backcountry the 40 oz (1.2L, $25.95) is my choice.
- Lids are replaceable, carabiner compatible and come in stainless steel or BPA-free polypropylene.

Though I appreciate all of the Klean Kanteen features mentioned, I would have to say that my favourite thing about these bottles is the fact that I can leave my bottle on the back of the stove (lid off of course and not in direct contact with a high heat source) when I return to a cabin after a day of backcountry skiing. The ice melts and I have warm water to drink when it's minus 20 outside.
Klean Kanteen (www.kleankanteen.com) produces a wide array of sizes and configurations for their bottles so check out which one fits your life best and start doing your part. A healthy choice for you and the planet.
