Everest Base Camp Trek Nepal and Lobuche East Peak
May is typically Mount Everest climbing season and this year is no exception, a few climbers have already summited and hundreds more are making their way up the mountain for their turn at a summit bid. Three Sherpas have already lost their lives in this high risk game to get relative green clients to the top of the highest mountain. Hopefully there will be no further loss of life this season on the mountain.
This time of year Everest Base Camp is a small city with hundreds of tents, high tech wizardry and most of modern day conveniences. Back in November of last fall the Backcountry Skiing Canada team made a trip to Nepal to climb 20,000ft Lobuche East Peak and visit the famed Everest Base Camp in the Solu Khumbu Region of Nepal. At that time Everest Base Camp or EBC as it's known was nothing more than a pile of rocks and boulders awaiting the spring rush of climbers. Prior to arriving at Everest Base Camp we had been acclimatizing for two weeks by trekking the 40 or so kilometers from village to village on the way to EBC. Along the way we decided to climb Lobuche East Peak which is now a training peak for would-be Everest climbers. The peak was relatively easy by western Canadian standards and provided stunning views of 29,029ft Mount Everest, 27,940ft Lhotse, 22,349ft Ama Dablam and every other peak in a 360 degree radius. Our good friends over at Rab were kind enough to support our adventure and outfit us with some key gear to keep us warm along the way.
Have a read of our trip report and watch the video to discover what Nepal and the Everest Region has to offer, even if you don't summit the highest mountain in the world.
