It's the quest for more powder that attracted many of us to the backcountry. While the other side of the rope offers solitude from resort crowds and all the associated noise (chairlifts, terrain park stereos etc) skiing untracked snow is the main motivation.
Take an example of a day trip out in the Fitzsimmons Range in the Whistler backcountry. Fissile is steep and usually powder plentiful, but its a hotspot that attracts many backcountry skiers. A week or so after a storm many of the bowl and chutes are tracked. To the side of Fissile on Whirlwind lies a protruding arm that no one ever skis. It's short vert, but with a few playful (and sometimes safe) cornices its a great set of mini-golf lines with amazing turns to be had.
