Near crust faceting and slab avalanching with Bruce Jamieson and Scott Savage
While yesterday’s post was full of fun and shredding and all kinds of feel-good things, today’s post is a smidge drier, but for those who like snow science, it will surely be fascinating (there’s a pun in there I swear). Near crust faceting is a phenomenon that can lead to persistent weak layers, and under the right conditions, slab avalanches. The following video describes the formation of these layers and offers some ideas on anticipating the resulting slab avalanches.
