COMP - Slow and Steady
Breaking trail for 23 km in boot top snow sucks. It just sucks. There is no way around it. But early season skiing in the Little Yoho Valley makes it all worth it in the end, especially when you are celebrating your 5th Anniversary with one awesome woman!
Just how awesome is my wife Bonnie? Well, most husbands take their wives to a fancy hotel or a spa for thier anniversary, but we have spent the past 4 anniversaries camping out in the snow and skiing epic pow and just this year decided we would upgrade to a cabin in the woods. Nuf said.
To me there is nothing more incredible, or sacred, then hiking through a completely silent forest of towering trees, weighed down by snow, with millions and millions of stars above and the ghostly white giant mountains all around you. No picture or movie or story will ever capture those moments and I truly feel sorry for all those who have the opportunity for this experience, but never take it. I am always amazed how in just a few short generations, the incredibly bold pioneering spirit of our ancestors, who took on the great wilderness of North America with no warm house to go back to at the end of the day, is quickly disappearing. My Great Grandpa was a fur trapper and lived in a log cabin just like the one we spent 5 days in last week. Having done that trip makes me admire him even more.
If you have ever thought about heading into the Stanley Mitchell but were scared off by the miserable approach… its about time you changed your mind.
