Northern Road Trip with the Yurt on wheels - VIDEO
Back in the fall our friend Jared from Utah Outside informed us he was looking to get out of Salt Lake City for a road trip north. His destination was Canada and the Powder Highway, which (correct me if I’m wrong) has the largest concentration of cat, heli, resort and backcountry skiing locations in the world. His initial plan was to outfit his yurt on wheels (aka camper) with everything he and his two accomplices, Adam and Jon would need for their week long adventure and then hit the road north.
After some easy convincing I managed to sway Jared and his crew on over to the west kootenays to sample some of the finest backcountry skiing around—right here at our local resort called Whitewater. While this season has admittedly not been ‘average’ there was still plenty of safe turns to be found within the resort boundary and also outside the ropes. Back in Utah the ski resort dictates when backcountry gates are open or closed so the policy here in Canada was a unique one for our American friends and they were all to happy to take advantage of these liberties.
We spent a couple days skiing together powder mining the goods in Five Mile Basin and I believe we were able to provide as Adam said: “The best turns of the year”. While I was hoping to show the UtahOutside.com crew the epic treats that Whitewater is know for, the timing of storms and stability was not totally in our favour this time. This just means that the boys will surely be back and, We’ll be more than ready to show them what Whitewater and the Powder Highway has to offer.
Be sure to check out Jared's site UtahOutside.com for all kinds of backcountry goodness as well as his trip report.
