Kananaskis Heroes Knob and Murray moraines
Skied both days in Kananaskis. Saturday in the Mt. Murray moraines then Sunday in the Heroes Knob basin. Coverage is great for this time of year with a supportive snow pack right from the road with around 1.5 meter snow pack at treeline. The wind event in the alpine from last week did a good job of moving snow around scouring anywhere that was exposed and dumping some pretty big pillows. These features are getting pretty well hidden with 30 to 50cms of new snow making the coverage look more even than it is. In both places most of the safe easily accessible lines have been punch by skies traffic, not supper surprising. There are still lines left just not the classic ones. On Sunday the wind pickup in the alpine and started to move snow around and forming stiff surface slabs that popped off pretty easily. There is a ton of snow out there for transport so it doesn’t take much wind. We found shears at around 30 and 60cms and sometimes at 80 that really varied with the location. Overall we didn't experience the spookiness that Jake mentions but did find and huge amount of variability in the alpine. There was still great skiing from treeline all the way to the valley bottom on all aspects when we left.
