Are backcountry ski poles really needed and worth the money?

Is there really that big of an advantage to the benefits of ski poles designed specifically for backcountry skiing compared to those for resort skiing?

Fixed poles are light, inexpensive, comfortable and reliable. However, on big ski tours having an adjustable ski pole is convenient as you can adjust the height for the climb up or ski down. Also having an extended grip allows you to re-grip in a more comfortable position when you need it.
