Suunto set to unveil new Ambit 3 GPS watches
Suunto just announced that there will be a new Suunto Ambit3 Peak and Suunto Ambit3 Sport Watch available in September. So whats new with the Ambit3 compared to the current Ambit2? How about blue tooth compatibility with your iPhone, a brand new Suunto Movescount App, or the ability to make a slick movie of your route like the one below from Kilian Jornet’s of his recent record ascent of Denali (more on that here):
Suunto Ambit3 Sport
The Suunto Ambit3 Sport will still provide the ability to track your running, swimming, cycling and multisport training sessions and include heart-rate monitoring, pace, route and navigation functionality. New features include those mentioned above as well as a function to record heart rate while swimming as well as the estimation of needed recovery time after your adventure. We first saw this feature in the Suunto Quest (which we reviewed last fall) and have since been wishing Suunto would include this in future upgrades. Wish granted.
Ambit3 Sport features:
- Advanced running, cycling and swimming functionality
- Heart rate recording while swimming
- Bluetooth® Smart Sensor support for external pods and belts
- Recovery time and activity tracking
- Smart mobile connection with iPhone and iPad
Suunto Ambit3 Peak
The New Suunto Ambit3 Peak still provides route navigation, barometric pressure, altimeter and compass functionality as well as all the features of the Ambit3 Sport mentioned above. The new Peak model however will provide twice the battery life of the Sport model with 50 hours reported in GPS mode.
Ambit3 Peak features:
- Advanced outdoor and multisport functionality
- Route navigation
- Altimeter/barometer/compass
- Up to 50 hours battery life in GPS mode
- All features of Ambit3 Sport
Movescount Mobile App
The new mobile App will provide all of the following features:
- Access Movescount and customize watch on the go
- Notifications from phone displayed on watch
- Use phone as an additional watch screen (perfect for cycling)
- Upload and view your moves instantly
- Take photos with automatic data overlay and share on the go
- Create, view and share Suunto Movies with one tap
- Ability to use Movescount platform without a watch
Last fall we prepared a complete review of the Suunto Ambit2 and the year before that the original Suunto Ambit and since Suunto keeps pushing the envelope with GPS/Altimeter watches you can bet we’ll be reviewing the Suunto Ambit3 as well. Prior to our review we’re going to get an up close and personal look at the new Ambit3 at the up coming Summer Outdoor Retailer show on Aug 6/7 so stay tuned for that.
