Tenkara: A rod, a line, a flyfly-fishing at its simplest.
The origin of the name Tenkara is thought to literally mean ‘from heaven’ and is more of a reliance on technique than gear. It’s a traditional Japanese method of fly-fishing that uses no reel as in traditional fly fishing, only a rod, a line and a fly. This gear is super compact making it ideal for backpacking and fishing in mountain streams and lakes.
Tenkara rods are telescoping and range in length from 10’8” to 14’ 7” and use a fixed length of line. This provides a long reach while fishing but the rod packs down to just 12” in length so it can be easily brought along on any hike, bike or spring ski tour.

Tenkara USA was founded in 2009 by Daniel Galhardo who is bringing his passion and the sport to North America. Daniel’s company produces and sells a variety of Tenkara rods ranging in price from just $157 to $235US. Once you purchase a rod all thats left to buy is a line and a fly which can be acquired for under $30. Tenkara USA designed “The Keeper” which is an innovative device designed to hold two Tenkara lines and your flies. While The Keeper is not an essential piece of gear it does make things easier and retails for only $12US.
Tenkara keeps things simple and relies more on technique than gear but don’t think it takes years to master. At Outdoor Presscamp this June in Deer Valley I got to try Tenkara first hand. While I didn’t land any fish I did have success casting after just a few attempts. The process was simple, calming, and enjoyable. I guess you could say I am ‘hooked’.
