Abbot Pass Hut Update 2022

Situated on the Continental Divide in a col between Mounts Victoria and Lefroy, Abbot Pass Hut was built in 1922 by Swiss mountain guides. They used locally quarried supplies and stones that were carried on horseback and on foot to the pass at 2925m. Its sturdy design rendered it the second highest permanent structure in Canada, harkening back to the golden age of Canadian mountaineering, which made it a national historic site.
 
Sadly, Abbot Pass Hut has been negatively impacted by the effects of climate change. Slope erosion and glacial recession have caused structural damage to the cabin despite efforts to stabilize and preserve it in its original location. As a result, and in order to mitigate a risk to visitor safety, Parks Canada has made the difficult decision to dismantle and remove the hut this Spring 2022 just shy of its centennial anniversary.
