Electromagnetic Interference
Electromagnetic interference is an issue in modern backcountry travel.
????How many devices do you have when you’re out touring? As for myself, I carry a radio, a cell phone, a gps watch and an SOS device most days I backcountry skiing.
????Having a system to manage said interference is integral to being a good backcountry partner and ensuring your partners have the best chance of finding you in case of a burial.
????These two videos demonstrate electromagnetic interference generated by a cellphone in airplane mode. The transceiver is in “analog mode” so you can better hear the interference. In the first video, note the high pitched interference tone and ghost distance generated by the phone.
✌️The second video shows the same phone in a faraday pouch. Note what happens when the transceiver is brought closer to the camera (cellphone).
????The faraday pouch is something I’ve been considering for several years. I use my phone in the backcountry for navigation and as a camera all the time. I don’t want to turn it off on account of that. Carrying my phone in a faraday pouch (50 cm away from my transceiver) will help me realize it’s utility while managing the risk of interference.
